downloading macOS only '08 iMac

I bought a new iMac and migrated my data from the old to the new. I want to donate toehold so I wiped the HD for security and tried to download back the best OS for that machine--i.e. the same one I had. Can't seem to do it and can't get help from AppleCare.

What can I do???

That model came with a set of Software Restore DVDs with gray labels. Use them to install the original version of OS X that came new from the factory. If you no longer have the disks, then you need to purchase them from someone on eBay or Amazon, provided that you can find the proper set. Or you can try buying a retail copy of Snow Leopard.

I would suggest that you recycle the machine. It is virtually useless to anyone.
