Apple doesn't repair Airpods, they replace them.

Just an idea, it looks like that could be wear and tear from storing them without the case.
I have had my AirPods for slightly more than a year and have not had that issue.
I recommend sending them in for repair by Apple, it should be covered by the basic warranty plan.
