Request for Apple ID password even for update of free apps

I have had this issue, that many people post about. Trying to update an App, it asks for the Apple ID password, then tells you it is the wrong Password, even though you know it is right.

One question to ask yourself - did you originally download this App to this device using this Apple ID? You see, the device tags the ID that was used for the initial download. Only that ID can “authorise” the update.

I found one solution - which may be painful if you have data associated with the app. Simply delete the App, and re-install it with the ID that you are now using. Then future updates will also be associated with your current ID.

i found all this out after many hours of struggling, after I “un-linked“ my wife’s I-pad from my account, and then she could no longer update apps.

You can try setting up Family Sharing between the IDs if you want to be able to share purchases made with the IDs.
