iphone X longevity

How long should I expect my iphone X to live?

I am writing this here after having experienced a situation where I was stranded in the middle of the street at night after my twilight shift at the hospital had ended with my iphone being of no use to me.

During March 2018 I bought the iphone X which was still fairly new at the time and apple's flagship phone from Saudi Arabia. Less than a year later my phone developed a hardware issue, being in Egypt at the time I called apple's certified service provider there and I was told I would be issued a new phone as the phone was still under the one year warranty. A report was made in my name and I traveled to the UK and replaced my iphone on March 29th, 2019 at Manchester's Arndale branch.

Less than a year later during Jan 2020 while at Heathrow airport my phone's network connection disappeared. I visited Southampton's West Quay Apple store and filed a report there on 28th and 29th of January 2020. I was told that AGAIN, in under one year my iphone's internal antennae was now non functioning. Not only that, but:

-It cannot be replaced

-It cannot be fixed

-I cannot receive a new phone because my warranty period had ended

-I cannot exchange my iphone and pay an additional price for a new one as this one is now non-functioning.

I was basically left with a dysfunctional piece of metal that cannot pick up a network, make/receive calls, or have internet connection unless under wifi. To make matters worse, I was forced to purchase a spare phone in the meantime and discovered that I would not be able to sell this faulty phone to any 3rd party store as it is a replacement phone. So not only would apple not take/fix/replace it, it wouldn't allow me to sell it elsewhere.

Having just relocated to the city and started a new job as a doctor, the faulty phone was not an immediate issue that required addressing at the time. Just over a month later we were faced with a global pandemic and brought onto the front lines and again, I was forced to postpone confronting the issue. Only last week, after having my spare phone's battery die while waiting for my uber in the middle of the street did I realize that I had in my hands another phone, worth over a 1000 pounds that could do nothing and was of no benefit to me.

I have always been a loyal apple customer, knowing that my money goes towards a product of high quality and excellent customer service however having 2 iphone Xs not survive one year of handling falls extremely below expectations regarding the phone's longevity and compels me to question if buying an apple product really means quality for value.

My question is:

Is this normal? Or should we not expect better quality for the money paid to purchase apple products?? Very disappointed.

I think you've just been incredibly unlucky! In any batch of mass-produced articles (the iPhone is one), whether we're talking about cars, expensive watches, high-end TVs, washing machines, refrigerators etc. there are always going to be a few that have problems or suffer failure. I've been there! FWI it´s worth I bought my iPhone in Decmeber 2017, just after its release. As of today the battery is showing 97%. And "anypats" is right...price really doesn't have anything to do with it. I once bought a very fancy and expensive toaster. It broke outside of the warranty period. I then bought the cheapest toaster I could find...from China. It´s still toasting after ca. 15 years! Regards, Ian.

I have an iPhone X which was also purchased March 2018 and it's running just fine. The battery health is at 83% so I'll probably have that replaced this year but other than that I haven't had any issues. Over the years I've had different devices that have lasted a long time - a couple iPhone 7 devices, iPhone SE, multiple iPads, Apple Watches, etc. and others that have had to be replaced either under warranty or out of warranty. Everything comes with a one year warranty and you have the option of purchasing AppleCare to extend the warranty when you buy it. Sometimes things fail and sometimes they last for years. Price really doesn't have anything to do with it.
