Late 2009 iMac not booting

I recently got a late 2009 iMac, when I try to turn it on the screen flashes a pinkish red color, and then the fans go on full speed. Then nothing else happens, the screen stays black and the fans stay on full speed. Does anyone know a fix for it?

Return this to the Seller. Request a refund.

Where was this Purchased?:

  • A Retailer: If purchased at a retail store - talk to the store manager and see if a refund is an option.

  • A Web site: If purchased on a Web site (i.e. eBay), view the Terms & Conditions and see what can be sone on their part, if they did not abide by the rules.

  • In-Person: If purchased in-person, and they do not get back to you, then there may be nothing you can do. That's just the way it is :(

Remember it is 11 + years old, I think it is fairly clear the problem is hardware, specifically what we have no way of knowing. If it were mine I'd have it recycled responsibly as:

A) Apple has considered it obsolete for many years now, meaning parts are no longer available.

B) If you could find parts (most likey used) they would cost more than the computer is worth.

C) You would be guessing at what is wrong and likely throwing money away.

You can take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider to be diagnosed if you want but as a do-it-yourself project, don't spend the time or money on it.

If you want an iMac then please buy one, if you cannot afford a new one then there are options to get used machines that actually work and are covered by warranties. For example....www.macsales.com sells a number Macs and offers warranties on them and they are very reputable. Avoid places like e-bay, Amazon used, Craigs list. Apple themselves sell refurbished iMacs that are identical to new, have the same warranty as new, are eligible for AppleCare and can save hundreds of $.

It being old depends completely on what you are usually expecting from your computer and environment. In terms of used power/workstation stuff, a new fresh system cannot be beaten, but for casual users who want to web browse or do school work or low-end game, upgrading the computer’s ram and to an ssd can let the system probably exist for 5 more years. Since our world has limited resources - some people think different here - there is also another gain of making industrial products work a long, long time.
