Question: duplicates in my itunes library

I have duplicates of an album I recently purchased from iTunes only in the MacBook Air iTunes library. My iPhone only shows one music file of each song. When I select a duplicate on my MacBook Air, the message saids it will remove all files from other devices. Wont I lose the song on my iPhone?

Hello Carterce42,

I see that you are showing duplicates from an album that you purchased. I can understand wanting to get this issue resolved, and I'd be happy to help.

If this is only happening with the one album, delete the album and then download it again. If it should also delete from your iPhone, you should be able to also redownload it to your iPhone. The article below can assist with those steps, if needed.

Redownload apps, music, movies, TV shows, and books

Hope this helps.

Have a great day!

Hi, and thanks, I will do that. But your question made me remember that the message also occurred for a music file from an another album. Yesterday I wanted to remove my duplicate music files. However, for all but two albums, the option presented was to hide the files from my library, not remove them. I hide them hoping to find them and permanently remove them at a later date. The option to remove (from all devices) only occurred with files from a single song on a soundtrack, and all files on the recently purchased album. So now I’m not sure what’s going on with my MacBook. Why would it hide some and delete some.

With purchases iTunes and Music can sometimes show duplicates when it doesn't manage to match up the local item with corresponding item in the purchase history. Deleting one might trigger the hide purchase warning while the other is treated like ripped files would be. Try signing out of the store and back in again to resolve such issues.

Hello Carterce42,

Thanks for reaching back out and providing those additional details. Not sure that we would be able to answer the "why", however, you can choose to hide them if you wish. Deleting them will not mean that they are lost for good. You should be able to redownload them.

If you choose to hide them, the article below will guide you through those steps.

Hide and unhide music, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, and books
