Question:

Question: I have an old airport express base station (ID 001124EAB98B)

I can`t find it in my airport utility.

Have MacBook Pro later 2013 running the latest OS.

Is there a way to find it and connect it to my newest timecapsule and/or airport express to extend my wi fi network?

Unfortunately, the A1084 is not compatible with the operating system that you have on your Mac.

In addition, there was no "extend a wireless network" option offered for the A1084 model, which was discontinued by Apple in 2007, so even if the product was compatible with your Mac, it could not be configured to extend the network. Apple currently lists the product as "Obsolete".

If you do need to extend the Time Capsule network, check eBay.com for new, refurbished and used AirPort Express models. Type AirPort Express into the search bar.

If the Express has only one Ethernet port, make sure to get the A1264 version. The two port version, model A1392 would be the better option since it is a newer model. An AirPort Extreme would also be able to extend the network and provide higher performance than an Express.

If you decide to move forward, post back when the AirPort Express arrives and we'll go over the setup with you.

Happy to help.

Frankly, it is nothing short of a miracle if the old AirPort Express will even power up at all, much less operate. Most of these devices failed after 4-5 years of use, very very few made it to 10, so you are way ahead the curve.

If you happen to have a PC or a friend has one, it might be possible to set up the ancient Express to "join" the network for use with AirPlay. But.....it cannot "extend" the network because it never had that feature, which was available only when the A1264 version of the Express was introduced.

Unfortunately, the ID does not tell us what version of the Express that you have. Does the AirPort Express have two Ethernet ports, or only one?

The two port version looks like this:

The single port version looks like this:

IF.......it has only one Ethernet port, look on the side of the device for the model number. It is hard to see, with gray lettering on a white background, so you may need good lighting and/or reading glasses to see it.

The model number starts with an "A" followed by 4 numbers. Example......A1084 or A1264.

Post back with the model number so we can proceed.

More as a general comment.. but if you are wanting better wireless in your home an Airport Express is NOT the tool for the job ever. The last one made is still N wireless with tiny antennas so poor range.

Is there a way to find it and connect it to my newest timecapsule and/or airport express to extend my wi fi network?

If you wish to extend wireless with another wireless router.. then an Airport Extreme AC model is a far better choice and plenty available cheap 2nd hand.

Will have to move forward then... maybe use it as dog toy (LOL)

The toy router becomes the dog toy seems appropriate.

If you are happy to plug another wireless router or AP into the Time Capsule then buy a more recent router as even the AC model airports including the Time Capsule are now 7 year old design and huge advances have happened in wireless. Plus the Airports were never great range at the best of times.
