Question: Target disk is not booting

Hi everyone. I have a Mac mini 2018 running macOS Mojave 10.14.6. I have disabled Filevault on the internal SSD and disabled the T2-chip EFI encryption. I am able to get the Mac mini into target disk mode. The problem comes when I want to boot from the target disk using a different computer. I am able to access files on the Mac mini SSD (Macintosh HD shows up as an external disk) after connecting a thunderbolt cable to another Mac (running Catalina) and entering my password. From the GUI, my password works. But when I try booting into the Mac mini SSD from this other machine, it asks me for my password before the boot sequence even begins and my password just doesn't work.

I have even booted into Mojave on the Mac mini, changed my password, and reattempted the TDM boot to the second machine…but the new password wouldn't work either. After a few attempts, it asks me if I want to use my Apple ID to reset my password. When I did that, the computer restarted and attempted to boot into a recovery OS and you guessed it…that didn't work either (flashing 🚫 sign on the EFI boot).

How can I boot from this Mac mini in TDM using a separate computer? The password "protection" is just preventing me from doing anything.

Mac mini, macOS 10.14

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities, double.o.five.

If I understand your post correctly, you're having trouble using target disk mode. I’d like to help.

Target disk mode allows you to move files from one computer to another using one computer as an external drive. These articles will tell you more about how target disk mode works:

Transfer files between two Mac computers using target disk mode

Use target disk mode to move files to another computer

Let us know if that resolves this issue for you.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Take care.
