Early 2011 27 inch iMac appeared to overheat and shutdown. Next day we were able to restart it. I decided to run a diagnostic on it by pressing "d" upon start up. The computer said "Starting Internet Recovery." It's been 2+ hours so far. Is this normal?
Yes, you can as long as it is simply trying to connect. You're not actually within recovery erasing the drive, right?
If yours is an early 2011, you need to use the original install disks that came with it - recovery will not work on yours:

Diagnostics was erased some time in the past & 2011s can't do the Internet one...
