my iPhone XS Max keeps exciting. my MacBook Pro hasn't yet updated to Catalina 10.14.5, can it be that the problem??
do I have to wait until my MacBook Pro has the latest version of macOS ?

Try a restart.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Try a forced restart.
Then try again.
According to the Apple Support article below, Catalina isn't required. Are you using iTunes? There are instructions for resetting it without using a computer.
yes, I'm trying to factory reset my iPhone but (I think) due to not having the latest macOS it keeps exiting the Recovery mode. my fear is that even downloading the latest version it won't work. any ideas ?
no, I forgot my passcode and its now on recovery mode, it requires me to use iTunes or finder (latest MacOS). but the problem is that I'm already on the latest Catalina 10.14.5, I have connected my iPhone to my Mac and It appears to be downloading but its taking too long. I've read that if it takes more than 15 minutes it would turn on on itself and I'd have to start over (what its happening right now). by the way thank you for your responses so far!
I got stuck on the part that my Mac its downloading the software for my iPhone. it keeps taking more than 15 minutes so my iPhone keeps turning on and I have to restart the process all over again. I already tried 5 times... I don't know what else to do.
Exciting? Do you mean exiting? Are you trying to restore a backup? Factory reset the phone? More information would help.
When the phone turns on, can you turn it off, and continue the process?
yes. when it turns on, I turn it off immediately and repeat the process.
