Does Apple Pay work with Verifone at gas pumps?

I pulled into a gas station and it was going to be my first time using Apple Pay which I set up a month ago. I went up to the pump but didn't see anything about "Apple Pay." I did see something called Verifone but couldn't figure out what to do with my phone. What is Verifone and does Apple Pay compatible with that and what exactly do I do with the phone if it is compatible? Thanks.

It may or may not. Verifone makes payment processing terminals that are capable of accepting Apple Pay but in addition to a compatible terminal there are other factors that the gas station may or may not have in place. If they accept Apple Pay you would normally see an indication of that at the terminal. Also see: How do I accept Apple Pay in my store - Apple Support

The link I gave is for merchants -- but it explains all of the things that are needed in order for them to accept Apple Pay.

It is possible for a merchant to have a Verifone terminal and only accept physical cards or where the terminal itself would be compatible with Apple Pay but the other factors listed in that article are not in place. One of the local places where I attempt to use Apple Pay will not accept it when the payment is via Mastercard but will if it is by Visa; that terminal another local place accepts it but requires a signature.

Oh well, I guess many technology rollouts often happen in fits and starts. This one is sure taking a while, though. Next time I need a tank of gas, I'll go to the same place and find out.

When it doesn't work, does the phone display an error of some sort? Or does it just not respond at all when you hold it near the terminal?

Thanks. That website link is for merchants and isn't really helpful for a customer like me. I did see this article from the Apple website that has a video showing you how to pay in stores with Apple ID using Touch ID or Face ID. It notes that there are two different symbols that indicate Apple Pay compatibility - the regular "Apple Pay" icon we're used to seeing and another one that is just like what the Verifone terminal had at the gas pump.

I'm also curious: if a Verifone terminal is not necessarily Apple Pay compatible, what is it primarily compatible with?
