iPhone8 stuck in portrait mode

Recently, my iPhone8 won't allow me to look at things in landscape, even though portrait mode is turned off. We just updated it, so we have the latest IOS on it, 13.4.1. Sometimes, if you power it off and on several times, it will work. But not always.

Is this most likely a hardware problem? Any ideas at to what we can try to do?

Hello morettina98,

I see you have tried some of the troubleshooting steps and its not helping with the issue, I understand that your iPhone is working fine despite this one feature.

To be able to successfully hard reboot the iPhone 8 the keys to press needs to be quickly pressed and in sequential order as mentioned in the article and when you see on your screen the message "slide to power off" you ignore it and keep pressing on the Side Botton until the screen goes completely dark then the apple logo will show on the screen.  If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen

I would also make sure that your display setting is set to standard not to zoomed, or under your accessibility feature you do not have zoom turned on as both these setting stops your display from rotating, If your Home screen icons are magnified on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If the issue persist you can always contact our support at Contact Support where our team can help you with your next step.

Take care!

Hello morettina98,

Thank you for contacting Apple Support Community! I see your iPhone seems to be having issues with rotating the screen between portrait and landscape orientation, being able to use this feature is important in your iPhone 8.

To be able to isolate the issue if its hardware or software I always follow these steps in the following articles to get a clear view for next steps.

First I will follow the steps on this article to make sure the portrait orientation is turned on or off, Rotate the screen on your iPhone or iPod touch

Second I will follow the steps on this article to restart the device, Restart your iPhone

Third when restart does not fix the problem I use the steps in this article for hard rebooting the iPhone, for your iPhone 8 it will be this part "iPhone 8 or later: Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Then press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo." If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen

Take care!

I was able to hard reboot the iPhone but it still made no difference.

We did a little of our own troubleshooting today and discovered that the compass & level don't work either, so it seems as though this is probably a hardware problem with the gyroscope. Unless you have any further suggestions for troubleshooting this, we'll be looking into possible local repair, or even possibly replacing the phone. Unfortunately, we don't have AppleCare for it. In the future, we will be purchasing AppleCare for any phones that we purchase.
