I have tried to connect a replacement AirPod but the sound still plays through the old one

I have recently replaced my left AirPod and I have followed Apple's instructions for connecting the new one, but they aren't connecting to my phone and the sound is still playing through the old airpod

Set up your replacement AirPods or charging case

If no help, try a full reset:

Reset your AirPods
