iCloud data and removing a phone or iPad from your account

When getting rid of an old device (iPhone or iPad) do you loose all the data (photos, contacts) that were saved during previous iCloud backups?


to reset the device, it says it will be removed from my iCloud account but I do not want to loose the backed up data
