Unable to use AirPlay with TV app

I've been trying to watch a TV series with the TV app and AirPlay. I have an old Apple TV device which won't let me sign in any more (probably related to 2FA) but does show up as an AirPlay device on the network, and otherwise seems functional.

If I attempt to send a show that plays on my phone (the screen is too small to watch it on, though) to the Apple TV I see "there's a problem loading this content".

Can anyone suggest why that might be so?

If you are trying to watch content from the Apple TV+ subscription, then unfortunately that is not compatible with an Apple TV (2nd generation), not even through AirPlay. Devices you can use with the Apple TV app and Apple TV+ - Apple Support

If you are trying to watch other content, then please specify.

If you have an Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation), and you have two-factor authentication for your Apple ID, then you may need to sign in using an adjusted procedure. Type your password followed by the six-digit verification code directly into the password field.

You likely run into the issue of the time limit for the verification code. To work around that, you can change the order of the steps:

First enter the characters of your password (do not submit yet), then manually request a new verification code, then append that code to the password, and then submit.

Thanks for the further comment.

I've been trying that procedure but it still tells me that my username or password is incorrect (both are, of course, correct).

If I try to sign in to the iTunes store, only supplying my password and not the code, it accepts it but then tells me that it can't contact the servers at the moment and I should try again later.

it can't contact the servers at the moment and I should try again later.

That may be a connection issue with the home network.

Use the Automatic IP and Automatic DNS settings for the network. Verify that Port 123 UDP (NTP) isn’t blocked. Set your ISP’s standard DNS in your router. If you used a VPN, try it without. Try resetting/restarting the devices, including the router/modem.
