2014 Mac Mini

I recently purchased a 2014 Mac Mini Core i5-4278U 2.6GHz 8GB RAM to replace my 2011 Macbook Pro. My question is what osx should I use on the Mac Mini? I'm still on High Sierra on my MBP. Is the Mac Mini powerful enough to handle Catalina?

Second question - Should I do a clean install, or use time machine to transfer all my files from my MBP? I prefer to transfer the files, I use the Mac for music production and would take me hours to reinstall all my software.

Thanks

There are a couple points to consider in terms of macOS.

First, if any of your "critical" apps are 32 bit or even parts

of them, they will not work in macOS Catalina.

Second, you can use Migration Assistant to bring your

apps and files to the new machine but be sure that

the new machine has at a minimum the exact version

or later of the macOS that you are migrating from.

Apart from that, if you have any issues with the current

system, make sure you straighten them out before migrating

otherwise you will just migrate them along with everything

else.

As a last note, if you are using any specialized hardware

with your Mac, make sure it is compatible with any newer

macOS you may be considering.
