As a first step, try a forced-restart as this may resolve the issue:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

You might be best advised to directly contact Apple Support to seek assistance. Your iPad may have a display fault - and the Support team may be able to run a remote screen diagnostic.

The link to Contact Support is at top-right of this page. During these extraordinary times, use of the link is the most expedient route to contacting Support.

i did chat with Contact Support (TanyaLee) and I was asked to bring the iPad into an Apple store. There was no mention of a remote screen diagnostic. I may have to mail it in as wait times are extensive at the Apple store. Hard to believe that Apple would sell a defective new Generation 3 iPad Air. For awhile, i thought it was some sort of split screen issue. Thanks for your suggestion.
