This morning I shut down and did a safe mode startup. The problem didn't recur. Then I did a normal restart, Again the problem didn't recur. I'm hopeful it's now gone forever.
Thank you, Eric, for your help and for sticking with me.

Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?
Try setting up another admin user account in System Preferences/Users & Groups to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply. Pastebin.

Eric, I do use Witopia VPN. I wondered if that could be a problem. I don't use any anti-virus.
i'll do the exercise you suggested soon. However, I'm not sure I can replicate the circumstances that caused the failures.
Thanks for helping me.

I tried in Safe Mode. Same problem.
Maybe unrelated — I keep getting a notice that Logitech wants to update and I need to change my privacy settings. I've been ignoring it because I don't use any Logitech hardware on my iMac.

I'm not sure this is the pastebin URL you need.
If it isn't, here is a Dropbox link to the Etrecheck log.

As I think about my Safari problem, I think it doesn't apply to all https sites — just to those on which I have to log in with a user ID and password. The page comes up with the log in boxes, possibly refreshes once or twice, and then posts the message saying it can't open the page.
You are welcome. Try disabling the VPN.
I disabled VPN. Same problem. I tried to log into mint.com (one of the problem sites) from another account on my iPad. Same problem. I'll try Safe Mode now.

I don't see any obvious problems win the Etrecheck report. Did you try the sites in another admin user account?
I did try another account -- my master account. Same outcome.
