the finder crashes when copying photos

on my new MacBook Pro 16 with Catalina I can't copy a large number of photos. As soon as I select them the Finder freezes, while in my old macs, it works perfectly. The same happens when I try to paste them or move them elsewhere. I have always moved more than 1000 photos at a time.

Since Ventura update I cannot import photos. I recently got the Ventura update on my intel based Mac. I am unable to import photos from SD card to my photos library that is on an external drive. I've been reading that some people are having similar but not quite the same issue as me... I tried just about everything. Restarting. Disconnect/reconnect. Disk utility unmount/mount. Change photos directory.

I was just reading about a bug in Catalina which affects copying large amounts of data.
