2011 Macbook Pro GPU failure fixed but...

Hello All,

Like the title states I was able to fix the defective gpu problem on a 2011 Macbook Pro but now the computer is super slow. I changed the HDD to a SDD but that didn't fix the problem. I also tried installing El Capitan and that didn't work either. The specs are :

2011 Macbook Pro 15" 2.3GB i7 CPU, 8GB memory

Is there anything I can do to fix it?

To check the health of the SSD try running DriveDX and posting the report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper. The trial version of DriveDX also allows you to run the SSD's internal short self-test diagnostic.

We can't read all the critical diagnostic info. Here is how to post the report:

Run EtreCheck, select “Report" from the left-hand pane (scroll down to the bottom of that pane to find):

When its report displays, click the "Share Report" icon from EtreCheck’s toolbar and then "Copy report” from the resulting dropdown.

⚠️ Please DO NOT highlight the text in the report before using Etrecheck’s “Copy report” command—that will garble the formatting and make the report slower and harder to evaluate.

NOTE: Changes in late 2018 to the forum software require you use the “Additional Text" icon (see example below) to embed the report into a post:

Paste the report into the resulting “Additional Text” window:

Your SSD drive is way too slow. it is all really small. But it does not have TRIM enabled, which might speed it up. If that does NOT speed it up, it may need to be replaced with a 500-ish GB or larger SSD drive.

sudo trimforce enable

Now any New deletions will free up space on the drive. But to release all the saved deleted data, you need to restart in Safe Mode, (hold shift at startup) and wait while it does an about five minute disk repair.

My apologies for the confusion! Let me explain it better: I just bought a 2011 MacBook Pro 15” from eBay. It turns out that the machine had the famous GPU failure problem which I was able to fix, however for some reason the computer is super slow and I am not sure if there is anything I can do to fix the slow performance. Hopefully this will clarify the confusion. Thanks!

Your post is confusing then. The title & first line of the post says you fixed the GPU issue and the system is just running slow. This implies the laptop is working fine except for the slow performance.

If you are still having GPU issues, then check out these links to try and force the laptop to use the Intel GPU:
