“Apps using iCloud” vs “Messages in iCloud”

Good evening.

Under Settings / Apple ID / iCloud / Apps using iCloud, I have the slider for Messages turned OFF.

Yet, when I Manage Storage, I see 6.8GB of iCloud storage being used by Messages. When I tap Messages, I’m offered an option to Disable and Delete. “If you want to stop using Messages in iCloud and recover your iCloud storage...” reads the explanation.

Why is this even here? Doesn’t the slider being in the OFF position mean I’m not using Messages in iCloud?

What is the difference between these two settings?

Thank you!

Turning off syncing by moving the slider to off doesn't delete messages already stored in iCloud. It only stops new messages from syncing. If you want the iCloud storage back, you need to use the Disable and Delete option.
