best upgrades for (white) macbook 2010

Hello

I still use my old white macbook (last one they made).

But i want to upgrade it so i can use it a few more years.

I already upgraded the RAM memory from 2gb to 4gb. Thats the maximum input in can get. I took these chips out of my imac of late 2009.

a few days ago i wanted to factory reset my macbook to give it a clean start. But that went wrong. I couldnt reinstall the macos. Contacted apple support but they didnt have a solution. So i had to put back a time machine backup.

Now my question are:

Is it usefull to put in new Ram memory? My current ram memory is more then 10 years old. Or do these chips dont go bad? and if they do how do i know there are going bad? And wich one do i put in exactly? i'm losing track in all the options.

I also want to put in an ssd. Can i put in anything i want that fits? or do i best use certain models/brands?

And then there is my biggest question. Wich os x do i install best. Currently i have snow leoperd after putting back the backup. But before i installed "el capitan". I have the feeling that my macbook is a bit faster now i put the backup back.

Is it worth it to upgrade my old macbook?

I wil only use it for some internet an very rarely type some documents. I also have a desktop computer witch i use for video editing. The macbook is just for some relaxing. so i dont want to spend to much money on this old macbook. But i also think its a waist to just throw it away while i could still good for a few more years.

Thank you for your help.

ps. The current os x installed is 10.6.8. but i have problems with upgrading my internet browers because they dont suport it anymore.

MacBook, OS X 10.11

Not all SSDs may be compatible with the SATA II controller in the older computers. Some SSDs have trouble auto-negotiating the SATA link speed. I have used the Crucial MX500 SSDs in the white MacBook 2010 model. An OWC Electra 3G SSD which is a SATA II SSD so there are no SATA link negotiating issues.

Install macOS 10.13 High Sierra since older versions of macOS don't work as well with SSDs. You can download the High Sierra installer and creating a bootable macOS USB installer:

ruud,

That Macbook will be useful for a few more years.

First, 4gb is enough for your usage profile. I have a 2010 MacBook Air with High Sierra (10.13.6) on it and 4 gb and I don't have any problems with a similar usage pattern. Your Macbook can actually take 16 gb but that is totally not cost effective. I don't think you will lose anything and you will save $40-$80.

Your Macbook can take up to High Sierra (10.13.6) and run it great with a ssd installed even with 4 gb.. Probably will seem faster than it does now with a spinning hd and 10.6. You can get the appropriate one from OWC Macsales and spend as much or as little as you want starting at around $35,

The best os with an ssd is High Sierra without a doubt. The older the os is the less it will be able to navigate the internet and have a secure browser. Getting High Sierra on it will be a bit of a chore if you want to go that way. There are many tutorials on how to do it on this site and around the web. All it will take a bit of searching and interest.

Good luck with it.
