How can I be sure which operating system I have on my iMac?

I bought anew iPad yesterday from AT&T I am unable to successfully engage it because full old iPad does not have up dated os 11 or better. How can update it to facilitate the easy transfer? This about both iPad and my mac which doesn't seem to be up[dating automatically either. Is a computer helping me?
