2009 iMac disc not erasing?

hey guys, I am trying to install El Capitan from USB. In the DU, trying to Erase either of the entries in the Internal menu is not working.


Searching the net I found these instructions which sowing using Terminal to run a command to erase the disk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dQBftQufS4


but not seeing how/where to open terminal, help please?

Indeed it seems your hard drive has failed, but...


To Open Terminal while in Recovery Mode:

  1. Boot To: Recovery Mode
  2. Go To: Utilities menu (top of screen)
  3. Select: Terminal
