app not visible in applications folder

Search reveals VirtualBox.app in Macintosh HD/Applications/

Launchpad shows VirtualBox.app icon

Finder applications folder doesn't show the icon or the file in list view

My first Mac and this is driving me crazy. Why would search show the file in a folder when the folder doesn't list it? Did virtualbox put some sort of link there instead of the actual app file?

MacBook Pro 16 with Catalina.

Unusual yes—Why is this an issue?

Did you try a reboot?

You can Uninstall the application, then reinstall it...

I can not recreate your issue.

You can always remove the Application folder form the Finder sidebar and drag a new application folder from the Macintosh HD and see if it straightens out your issue.

You asked "Why is this an Issue?" - Its because I am a new user on Mac and not comforted by one view of a folder showing content and another view of the same folder that doesn't show the content. Its about confidence in the OS.

You asked "Did you try a reboot?" - I hadn't, that was the old windows joke. But it worked for my Mac.

You said "Unusual yes" - That is good to know, I searched for this issue and just found comments about root and user applications folders, but that wasn't my problem. So I am hopeful.

I can't afford to lose files or lose track of files that are really there. So thanks for the reboot tip, though I'm hopeful I won't need that trick again.
