I've followed the above directions and my Apple TV box light is flashing. In the finder window it just says "software: Loading". This has been the status for at least 2 hours. how do I know if its actually working?

yes, that’s right. I kept getting an “install unsuccessful. Try later” message
So, I thought, I’d try to do it via my laptop. I disconnected from the hdmi to the tv, and connected to my laptop via usb c as directed. Plugged it back in and then when it came up in the finder clicked on it. I’m not sure exactly what happened after that but the finder window has said, “Software: loading...” for the past few hours. The light on the Apple TV box has been slowly flashing throughout.
