my airpods lose audio connection once i am on the phone or facetime

No matter who i call or what device i connect to , when i use my airpods while on the phone the person on the other end cannot hear me ! I’ve tried resetting my devices and disconnecting my airpods. I also called customer support and they told me to do the same thing. I am very upset !
