I am considering a MacBook but notice there are few USB C ports. I'd like to drive (possibly) 2 monitors and have a scanner and flash drives. How is the shortage of these ports handled without adding a bunch of wires/connectors?
You are right. The new MacBook computers only have the USB-C ports as you mentioned. Unless your monitors, Scanner and Flash drives can be connected directly to the USB-C port, you will have dongles and cables and possibly a HUB to accommodate your peripherals. The only way around it is to go with wireless devices or devices that use USB-C. Anything else and you will be entering The Dongle/Adapter/HUB Zone.
