Missing messages on my mum's iPhone 7 Plus

Hi all,

My mum wanted to look at her last messages with my father who passed away about 6 months ago and saw that none of her message history was there - when i checked his old phone it wasn't there either. Both had message histories set to 'keep forever' so I don't know why they would have disappeared. Mum's phone has no backups and Dad's phone automatically backed up just today. Although also his messages with me (SMS) are still there on both my phone and his. Does anyone know why or possibly a way to get them back?

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. I understand their are message missing unexpectedly from your mom’s iPhone. I’ll be happy to help with this.

While it’s hard to determined what caused this, the only way to retrieve the missing messages would be from a backup. I know you mentioned your mom doesn’t have any but it may be a good idea to double-check for a backup for both devices using the steps from this link:
