You would have to use your finger first to show the opened apps and then use the pencil to close the apps. Unfortunately you can't use the pencil to do the initial swipe up to return to home screen or bring up the opened apps.

Good call on not holding your breath. It has been like this ever since the introduction of the Apple Pencil. You can request the feature on the Apple feedback site.
