Cannot give Groups Group Names??? Tried apple directions - did not work!

You can name only group iMessages, not MMS group messages.

Name your group conversation

Have multiple group iMessages? Name your group iMessages so they're easier to find. To name your group:

1. Tap a group conversation, then tap the top of the conversation.
2. Tap .
3. Enter a name, then tap Done.

Types of group messages

The three types of group messages that you might see are: group iMessage, group MMS, and group SMS. The Messages app automatically chooses the type of group message to send based on you and your recipients' settings, network connection, and carrier plan. For example:

If, by "Messages Groups", you mean a group message conversation, you have only ever been able to name groups that consist entirely of iMessage users. If anyone in the group is using SMS, you cannot name the group. That's not new.

No, you didn't. This is because Messages is designed for iMessage, however it will also send SMS/MMS. The difference in platforms between Apple and Android is the issue here. However, you just introduced another question. You mention messenger groups. I'm guessing that may be a typo, since we were talking about Messages, the iMessage and SMS app on the iPhone, where as messenger, is a Facebook app.

Well, you never indicated what you were trying to name as I asked in my response. But since you have marked this Solved, I guess you have your answer. I'm not sure why you think Apple needs to catch up, as it is not known what you have detemined answered your question.

Are you trying to name a group of Contacts, or are you trying to name a Group Message? Groups are created in iCloud Contacts on the computer, and group names for a group message can only be done if the message is all iOS users. Any group message that contains a non-iOS user cannot be named. It would also help if you identified what method you used from the web, especially if it is not from Apple, so people know what you have already tried.
