If it’s helpful to you, your iMac probably uses a ‘blade’ type of SSD.

John B,

Please go to the Mac App Store and get MacTracker. I use it to translate model codes so I'm not guessing. An iMac7,1 is a 2007 model and I doubt blade SSDs existed when it was made. Had the OP stuck around and bought a blade SSD on your advice, well not good.

A 2007 iMac would use this kit: https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ssd/owc/imac/2007

Keep on helping, but keep a tool box of good reference materials handy!

  • Whoa...hang on there... . Plug an Ethernet cable into your iMac, reboot, holding down option-command-r together, making sure your external ssd is plugged into your iMac. You should see a spinning globe on your screen+ a progress bar, when loaded, you should see a language selection screen, pick one & continue. Use your mouse/trackpad to move the Cursor to the top center Of your screen and click, you should see OS X tools. From there pick disk utility. Run that. Your ssd should show up. Format it as follows: macOsExtended( journaled) master boot and GUID on, say okay. Your ssd should now be bootable and ready for use. Give it a name, done. Choose to re-install the os and don’t forget to make your SSD the startup disk when you are finally done. I’d ask if you already did a backup of your hard drive before it died or if you had a backup in place but probably not, maybe now is a good time to put a backup system on place. All you need is a spare external hard drive, same size as your iMac’s. Easy to set up , backs up automatically, you can know your stuff is safe.

well. I tried anyways

If you go to the large Apple icon at the top left of your screen and click on ‘about

this Mac” you should get an exact model + year, then go to Apple’s web page, assuming they still sell it, the specs should still be there, or go to everymac.com and type that ‘ imac 7,1” into the search window and it’ll come up with the specs for your model of iMac or you could try macsales.com who deal with all kinds of macs. If it’s helpful to you, your iMac probably uses a ‘blade’ type of SSD. If you need to replace/upgrade that on your iMac, those would be helpful. IFixit could be useful to you as well to see how possible that might be for you.

good luck
