Finger print option iPhone 11 Pro Max covid19

I live in New York, we are a state that has an executive order to constantly use facemasks until we Enter phase 4. We have just begun phase 1. I don't like the fact that I have to enter a passcode while there are cameras in the sky at stores and people behind us being able to see us type in our numbers. Please allow the thumb to read the print. We need to swipe open our phones anyway. Can this be done during this crisis. I've known too many people who have had their iPhones stollen due to this.

Well, what you think apparently isn’t what Apple thinks. And they know a lot more about the internals of the phone than you do. If you want Touch ID sell your phone and buy one that supports Touch ID. that’s the only way you are going to get it.

You might want to read up on how Touch ID works. Google will help you find it. You may then understand why it can’t work the way you think it can. But for a start, the Touch ID sensor doesn’t just scan your fingerprint. It is sensitive to the pressure of all of the high points in your fingerprint in a 3D scan of your finger. And it is paired with the secure enclave that stores the parameters of your fingerprint. The secure enclave in your iPhone 11 has no place to store those parameters; instead it stores your face scan. While it might be possible to bypass all of that security and read a 2 dimensional image of your fingerprint, that would also work with a scan or image of your fingerprint, so the phone would have no real security.

So I don't need to call Apple because I work with them through the school districts. But thank you for your time

And what do they say when you ask them to enable Touch ID on a device that does not have the supporting hardware for it? As noted, Touch ID requires a piece of hardware not in any device built for Face ID. it's not a software switch they can supply with an iOS update.

With all due respect, I appreciate your response. I don't think it lacks the ability, because you either have to wake up your phone by moving it or using your thumb to move it to wake it up. That said I believe they can implement the thumbprint within the glass itself. If it detects touch why not your finger. I do not want to have to drop my mask to show my face, and I do not want people to see me typing in my password when no one is keeping a 6 foot distance around me. It's an invasion of privacy. Because nobody is following the 6 foot rule. Not to mention I shouldn't have to unlock my phone and keep it unlocked for safety purposes. Because then if my phone is lost somebody's got my phone. So Apple should come up with a solution. Does everybody agree with me? Bring back the thumb somewhere on the glass.?

I may be new to the forums, but I'm not new to Apple. As a certified IT tech and I work with Apple all day long, in a central school district, I appreciate what you've got to say. But I don't feel I have to change anything that I own. We're living in a time when theft is very easy to take these days. So I would appreciate it if you did not make a comment on my selling what I Own. And COVID-19 may be coming down in certain places but if we have to wear a mask in New York State until God knows when, I don't feel I should be putting in my password or taking one out just to use my phone. And if you pay attention Apple is thinking about implementing it anyway. I was just hoping it would be sooner than later.

As a person who works with Apple products as an IT support for school sector, we have been in touch with Apple. They are thinking about it, they are going to try to implement it, but we were trying to hope that it would happen sooner than later. And yes the suggestion has already been made to Apple. I'm hoping that maybe we can get the whole community to get this feature back going forward. Because I personally don't feel that I have to pull my mask down during this COVID-19 crisis To display my face or to put in a password that people can see me typing. That's all I was saying. So I don't need to call Apple because I work with them through the school districts. But thank you for your time
