I use a cotton-tipped swab as listed in the Apple cleaning article linked earlier, or occasionally and gently a toothpick, and with that being very careful not to damage the AirPod or its speaker grill.
Contrary to an earlier reply here, I’ve met AirPods and AirPods Pro fairly well plugged with wax, too.
Earwax does not get in AirPods.
