How to type a backtick!

How to type a backtick on the iPhone! I have v4.0. I tried holding down on the tilde and apostrophe keys but it's not in there on the US keyboard (for shame, Apple!). Then i found that the Japanese Romaji keyboard has not only backtick but also a bajillion cool/weird emoticons that it will auto-type: ` (>人<;)

Switch to the Romaji then hit 123 button then hit #+= button. Next hold down on the apostrophe symbol and when the key pops up, don't pick one, but instead just release the key, and now, a small blue round "menu" appears under the insertion point in the text, which will let you pick a backtick from the cool little pop-up "menu" display under the characters (a UI element not found on the US interface!). It's the farthest option to the left. I haven't verified yet if it's a true unicode backtick tho... Anyone?

Pro'9/BookPro/3Gs, Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier, System 7.1 on all machines. Just kidding.
