Authentication server could not be contacted

Any thoughts on how to reset a password when this is the response?

iMac, macOS 10.13

Thank you for contacting Apple Support Community! I see you are trying to reset your password and you got this error message "Authentication server could not be contacted, " It is important to be able to reset your account password easily.


To clarify, are you trying to reset the login password for the Mac (Using your Apple ID) or using the Apple ID website to reset the password?


Make sure that your device is connected to the Wi-Fi when trying to reset the password, this error might show up also if the website services is temporarily unavailable for a reason, you can always restart and try again. You can always view the status of the Apple services here: System Status


If possible, try another Wi-Fi network to see if the same issue occurs.


I would also make sure that none of the Apple Services are being blocked by the router. This may require help from either your Internet Service Provider or the manufacturer of your router to check this information: TCP and UDP ports used by Apple software products
