MacBook consistently freezing - could this be a hardware issue?

My MacBook Air (Early 2015) keeps freezing while in use. I used EtreCheck which came up with no major issues or performance problems. Eventually, I decided to wipe the hard disk, reinstall macOS and start from scratch to check if it was a software issue. The only thing I have installed since wiping the machine is EtreCheck which continues to show no problems. The machine still freezes every so often which forces me to manually restart. Could this be a hardware issue instead of software?

"Could this be a hardware issue instead of software?" Yes, it could. Run the hardware tests: Apple Hardware Test. Make an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar for service after the stores re-open. If you need to find an Apple Store - Find a Store - Apple. Also, see How to find your nearest Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) or Distributor (AAD). You may also get Apple authorized service at a local Best Buy.
