unable to burn playlist to disc

Suddenly I am unable to burn Apple playlist to disc. Just the other day at my Lenovo desktop device that is synced with my iPhone I created playlists and successfully burned them to disc. Today however, when I click on edit, the burn to disk task is no longer highlighted and is non-functioning. I am not getting any error code. Please advise.

Thanks for taking the time to personally address my concerns with definitions, illustrations, and with your valued experience. For the most part I do have a fundamental understanding of the Policy and guidelines. I do have an active subscription with Apple where I create my own playlists and enjoy them on my devices. I think my confusion may have been in the stipulation "to download, listen, and play the music that it must be purchased from the Apple Store". Because in the past I had actually purchased songs from the Apple Store for a charge to my account, I mentioned that this recent playlist was not "purchased". With my subscription I simply downloaded them from "songs in Apple". I think now based on your explanation, subscription (downloading) and purchase from Apple Store have the same restrictions when it comes to burning to disc. Either way, I realize now the limitations and restrictions.

As previously stated, you cannot burn Apple Music to a CD, whether it's in a playlist or not.

That's not correct. Purchased songs have to be downloaded (from the iTunes Store) in order for your iTunes Library to play them and for them to be added to an iPod, iPhone or iPad and then be playable even when offline. They also have to be downloaded and listed in your iTunes Library in order that they can be burnt to disc.


Can I just clarify a few terms you've used, because they appear to differ from the generally accepted definitions:

  • "Purchased, they were not downloaded" - when you purchase a song, you download that song onto your computer. If you don't, you won't have access to it
  • "Purchased" - you pay money for each song, or collection of songs on an album. They are yours to keep
  • "Apple Music" - a subscription service. Each month you pay a fee, which gives you access to far more music than you'll ever need (okay, that's my personal definition) - you get access to a lot of music. But when you stop paying the monthly fee, you lose access to all that music
    • Apple Music is in effect downloaded, but it requires the device playing the song to be a part of the Apple Music subscription. Apple Music can be played on portable devices, even when offline, but (I assume that) there will be periodic checks to ensure that the subscription is still valid. If the subscription is no longer in use, Apple Music songs will no longer be playable
  • "Apple Playlist" - I still do not understand what you mean. A "playlist" is simply a list of songs, grouped together with the intention that one plays them as one collection. An "Apple Playlist" is simply one prepared by Apple
    • if you use an "Apple Playlist" or anyone else's playlist, it's simply someone else's choice of what you listen to
    • if you download a playlist, what you're actually doing is downloading a small file that lists the songs - and the songs themselves. If any song in the list is missing, it won't be playable and if it's copy-protected (such as Apple Music), you won't be able to burn it to disc. For both those reasons, that's when - and why, you will see a message telling you that not all of the songs in the playlist will be included in the burn
  • "Playlist" - a list prepared by someone, of songs. That list is in a form that different programmes (iTunes and Windows Media Player for example) should all recognise as a playlist, rather than a random assortment of songs
    • an album is "a playlist", in which the choice of songs and the order they play in is decided by the artist
    • a Various Artists album is "a playlist". The choice of songs on that album was made by a business executive
    • a genre is "a playlist". You can choose to play all of a specific genre, so that makes it a playlist
    • any list of songs that someone might play as one group, can be considered "a playlist". If I select one artist in my iTunes Library, the list it shows me is a playlist, that I can play as one group of songs. There's nothing magic about them.
  • If you use both iTunes and Window Media Player, I'm not surprised that you end up with anomalies between the two

Thanks Fiend! Previously I had downloaded a playlist from yes fitness music.com (royalty free for instructors) to my Apple playlist. At my desktop while logged into Apple Music I highlighted the playlist, clicked in “file” at your upper left hand side, and from the pull down menu I selected “Burn Playlist to Disc”. I was next prompted to name and save, and import playlist. There was a point where Apple stated that not all of the songs will be included on the playlist?

But I proceeded. When I opened my Windows Media Player I was able to pull that missing song from recently imported music so I dragged it along with the new playlist where I saved and burned a CD successfully except that after the first few songs the song titles are out of order for instance song number five is titled as song number six?

The next day I created a playlist for mom. In this case I searched and downloaded (not purchased) Apple Music but was unable to burn mom,s playlist to CD as the function command is not highlighted. It is grayed out. The only explanation I find is that songs “purchased” from the Apple store cannot be burned to any disc formats but these songs were not purchased, they were downloaded.
