Resetting NVRAM doesn't work

I have a 2017 13-inch MBP with Touch Bar. I'm trying to reset NVRAM in order to fix issues I'm having with my Touch Bar being partially blacked out and flashing when inactive.

I've followed the guide that says to hold down Option, Command, P, and R, but I've tried multiple times and it doesn't work. Right when I start up my laptop, I hold the 4 buttons. I've held them for as long as 10 minutes and it doesn't finish starting up until I let go. The screen stays black (sometimes flashes dark gray) while I'm holding the buttons and the startup logo doesn't appear until after I've released the buttons. My NVRAM is notably not reset upon start up. Is there a way to reset NVRAM without the keyboard combo? I don't want to try holding those buttons longer than 10 minutes because it's quite a stretch for my two hands.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.14

You are likely pressing the keys a second too soon. If you hold any key down too early it will prevent the laptop from booting until you release the keys. You do need to be quick to hold the keys since the Retina laptops begin to boot very quickly, but I think you need to give yourself another half second or so before holding the keys. If you look closely at the Display you should see the backlight flicker on for a brief second about every 15 - 20 seconds (easier to see in a dimly lit room). I like to hold the PRAM reset for about a minute so it activates several times. It does take some practice to get the timing correct.
