NEW MACBOOK AIR. SLOW

I just got my new macbook air this week, and im already experiencing it slowing down. it cant load videos on twitter, and a simple searches often take 30 seconds or more to load. i have 194 gb of the 250 gb storage still available. Would it be helped if i had more icloud storage? or can i return it, should i return it?

There’s no easy solution here, but there are a whole lot of problem apps around pretending to be easy solutions. Regular backups, data encryption, good passwords, two-factor authentication, keeping updated to current, etc. That’s security.

As for your question? I use the integrated Apple anti-malware, and Gatekeeper. No add-ons.

Various apparently-even-reputable anti-malware and add-ons have been a mess of insecurity and of data leakage and vulnerabilities. Some of which have had data-collection-and-resale features that have surprised its end-users:

In one US government research report a while back, about a third of all vulnerabilities detected across the many government systems were found in the security software. Put differently, the quality of the app design and implementation of a whole lot of the add-on security software available is atrocious.

"CleanMyMac" claims another victim.

And, MacKeeper! A two-fer.

As if that's not bad enough, it gets worse:

Time Machine:
Time Machine Not Configured!

Since your Mac is new you probably have nothing to lose, but fixing those problems generally requires completely erasing it. To learn how to use Time Machine please read Back up your files with Time Machine on Mac.

If you have nothing on that Mac to lose, erase it as though you were going to sell it, then reinstall macOS and set it up again as a brand new Mac. To learn how to do that read and follow What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac.

The result will bear a resemblance to a brand new Mac. Set it up again. This time, don't wreck it by installing junk.

Reinstalling macOS without erasing it first will accomplish exactly nothing to rectify the problems caused by installing and using junk products that should never be installed on any Mac.

On the subject of (other) stuff you probably don’t want, but should be aware of:

Recognize and avoid phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams - Apple Support

There are various heavily-advertised apps that are best avoided, too.

The ways that many of the Macs are compromised are by getting folks to install stuff, and by getting folks to hand over their access credentials, and by folks re-using passwords. Not by breaching security or encryption.

Rather than going through a widely-varying series of questions to try to narrow down the cause, please download and run and post the results of EtreCheck here. Open a new reply here and then press the button that looks like a printed page to get a text input box big enough to paste the hardware and software configuration report here.

Get a backup first, as this may end up requiring a reinstallation to remove what’s been installed.

Here, remove CleanMyMac, and remove MacKeeper, reboot, and see if your problems persist.

Removal of some add-on cleaners and some add-on anti-malware can sometimes be difficult, requiring a reinstallation of macOS.

Add-on anti-malware and add-on cleaner apps can and variously have reduced performance, corrupted data, and occasionally and very deliberately have collected and resold all of your web history specifically including your purchase history.

Quoting from some of what’s been published on MacKeeper: “In January 2014, a class action lawsuit was filed against Zeobit in Illinois.[38] The lawsuit alleged that "neither the free trial nor the full registered versions of MacKeeper performed any credible diagnostic testing" and reported that a consumer's Mac was in need of repair and was at-risk due to harmful error.[38] In May 2014 a lawsuit was filed against Zeobit in Pennsylvania, alleging that MacKeeper fakes security problems to deceive victims into paying for unneeded fixes.[39][10] On 10 August 2015, Zeobit settled a class action lawsuit against it for US$2 million.[40] Customers who bought MacKeeper before 8 July 2015 can apply to get a refund.[41]
