we got the iPhone 6s from at&t a year ago and the battery is failing. Will Apple fix it for free?

The battery was getting so hot it was shutting down, I've done multiple resets and it will work but the battery dies in minutes from a full charge. We had the phone for 12.5 months and got it new from ATT.

No. The 2 warranty is one year. That's 12 months, not 12.5 months.

You will have to pay for a battery replacement.
