It depends on which generation of iPod you have.

Check on the iPod in the Settings app, to see if the following option is there: Settings/General/Software Update. Providing your iPod is connected to Wi-Fi, it will check for any update and tell you if there is one available.

iPod Touch generations:

  • The 7th generation (the latest one) can update to the latest version of iOS, which is 13.5.1 (released today, 1st June 2020)
  • A 6th generation can update to iOS 12.4.7, which I believe was released on 20th May 2020. Although there may be further updates for this generation, it will never be able to install iOS 13
  • A 5th generation can update only as far as iOS 9.3.5. If you look for updates, you will see a message telling to you that your software is up to date. This means what it says - this iPod is up to date, it has the latest version of iOS that it can use
  • A 4th generation can update only as fgar as iOS 6.1.6. If you look for updates, you will see a message telling to you that your software is up to date. This means what it says - this iPod is up to date, it has the latest version of iOS that it can use

If your iPod does not have the option to use the built-in software check, connect the iPod to its iTunes Library and look on the Device/Settings/Summary panel:

Your screen may look a little different to this one, but the information it provides will be appropriate for your iPod.

Thanks for the detailed answer. What you suggest is not working for me. When i go to software update on my ipod it says that i am up to date iOS 6.1.6. I need to get up to 10 or 12 to download things I want. When i bring up itunes on my ipad i do not find a device/settings/summary. It looks like something that you are doing on the computer, and not on the ipod?

I suggest you re-read my original post because when you do you will see that your iPod is doing exactly what I said it would do.

That was the first thing I wrote, followed by something you could do, on your iPod. Then there was a list of the more recent generations of iPod, one of which specifically mentioned iOS 6.1.6, which you now state that you have:

4th generation can update only as fgar as iOS 6.1.6. If you look for updates, you will see a message telling to you that your software is up to date. This means what it says - this iPod is up to date, it has the latest version of iOS that it can use

It means what is says - your iPod is up to date. You cannot install any version of iOS higher than 6.1.6.

Yes, it's on the computer. There is no iTunes on the iPad.
