I have the same problem with not hearing the caller but they can hear me.  My phone is a refurbished phone and I have only had it for a week or so.   The problem is not consistent, it occurs in 2 to 3 calls in a row (usually the same person calling back), then other calls are fine.   I have not dropped my phone and I have never had this problems with my other iphone4s. Whatever the problem is, it is a real problem.  I have no solution except if you have Applecare on the phone, use it.

I had the same problem after my iPhone 4 fell to the parquet floor this morning from a couple of feet but it was not a bad fall and it has a good protective casing. Anyway, I slapped it hard twice, face up and holding solidly in my hand, gripping on both the long sides, onto a wooden coffee table from about six inches. I did this during a phone call and now I can hear during phone calls again without having to use speaker or earphones. So JohnBauby's solution does indeed work, at least for my situation. Thx John.

Blowing into the headphone jack hole worked for me!  I tried all sorts of stuff from rebooting to restoring.  Nothing worked until I tried this decidedly low tech solution.  Apparently that is a sensor that detects when the headphone jack is plugged in and some dust or debris can trigger the sensor even when the headphones aren't plugged in.

Thank you all at Apple Community!  I suddenly couldn't hear calls I was making.  I tried everything suggested under this topic: Restore, plug and unplug earphones, blow in earpiece opening, shake phone Give up!  Called ,Verizon and they tried everything!  Finally they gave up and are Federal Expressing me a "new" phone?  I read one more post her:  get toothbrush and gently brush back and forth over speaker bar on top od touch screen.  it worked!  Why isn't this in Apple a troubleshooting manual!  I can't believe all the time wasted and Apps I had to delete!  Thanks again to whomever left this Tip!

I have experienced this very same problem about 2 hours back and all i did to solve it was to turn bluetooth off.

my theory is that the phones blue tooth accidentally paired with a bluetooth headset or some other bluetooth devise . this pairing probably caused the phones earpiece to switch off . However when the pairing was cut the earpiece simply did not switch back on and required the bluetooth setting to be turned off to work again .

I am not much of a tech savy guy but hope this helps some one

OK.. I had the same problem and noticed, when I was adjusting the volume on the side of the phone, the display said (headphones) even though my headphones or headset wasn't plugged in. I plugged in a headphone/headset jack and removed it quickly several times and... it works now. For some reason the phone thought I had the headphones still connected and was stuck on that setting. Hope this helps somebody!

I have the same problem since yesterday. I can not hear the ring tone, I can not hear anything but the person on the other side can hear me well. If I put it on speaker, or plug in the ear phone, it works fine. I did all the tricks I learned here: turn the phone on-off, adjust volume, plug ear phone in and out, hit mute button, hit speaker button, delete some latest purchased apps, blow air into the speaker, and on and on. I almost gave it up, then I saw a post saying hit the phone face up. I hold the phone face up using my right hand and smash it to my left hand palm really hard while I am calling another phone. Ouch, my palm really hurt! But all the sudden, I hear the ring tone and everything comes back to work! This makes me believe it is a hardware problem, got to be the wire is loose or some contacts misplaced.

It happened to me for the second time.  Last year it was fixed by blowing into the headpone jack hole.  This time... and I can't believe I'm saying this... hitting the phone hard during a call worked.  That's just crazy.  Remind me of the movies when a piece of equipment doesn't work kick or hit it and it starts working.

I read on another post, that if your earpiece speaker stops working, do the following:

    - Gently tap, not slam, hit, but with your finger tap hardly on the back of you phone a few times, which I did it, on my phone, and it's working again!

Annoying, but much better if it happens again, then taking it apart.

I've tried to blow the jack hole and do the plug and unplug things many times and it didn't work at all. I even tried to drop my iphone to the floor, tapping my iphone 4s, and press the ear speaker area and it didn't work too. I really run out of idea because i'm not able to use my phone normally. So i give the one last shot before i'm going to a technician to repair my phone. I called my provider cust service and there is still no sound from the ear speaker and i didn't hung up, then i'm hitting the front and the back of the iphone couple times (ear speaker area) to my knee (not too hard) while i'm sitting on a chair and its SUDDENLY WORKED. This problem already happened to me twice. In the first time, i just randomly hitting and tapping my iphone with my palm then it's worked. This second time took me longer to solved it. I guess there is really a problem with the iphone hardware. I'm just sharing, but if you want to try my method too, please be careful for not breaking your iphone. Thanks.

After trying all the tricks recommended, It worked!, but at the pressing the Speaker area hard with my finger, maybe it helps someone. but something strange happened after repairing, i was talking with someone and tryed to adjust the volume and baam! again the problem, after that started to press again the speaker with my finger an hit it slightly and it work again, for me it is both HW and SW problem, now i am afraid to adjust the volume during calls!

    Hi guys!!

I had the same problem just yesterday but seems like being a cave man sometimes works, i knock 3 times the ear speaker with my middle finger and suddenly started to work, so i guess it is some conector that goes loose or something, good luck to all!!!!
