My iphone 4 is three months old. I've not had any problems with it, even dropped calls. Today I listened to an audio book for two hours walking and when I returned home when I tried to make a call I couldn't hear it ringing. Then it dropped the call. The same thing happens if someone calls me. It rings, I answer and the call drops off.
I tried turning it off completely and on several times.
Called Apple and was told they'd send me an article (I don't have apple care) but they never did.
    Even speaker phone doesn't work.
Everything else on my phone seems to work fine, including messaging.

Anyone else experience this and is there an answer? The closest Apple Store is 3 hours drive away, so please, I need to fix this myself.

As i said before here are the results!
After reset, restore and try to plug and unplug the headphone 1.000.000 times i went to Shibuya Apple Store
I prayed to Lord Jesus inside the Shibuya Apple Store a few minutes before the guy call me.
They gave me a new one 5 minutes later.
I asked about this issue the guy told me it is a Known Hardware Problem!
He said "i saw this problem before"
Now im happy and more Christian!
Thanks to Apple support and Jesus.

here's my results. The next day I went into town where the AT&T signal is stronger and my iPhone was fine. Could call anyone and actually hear them just fine. It works fine at my house as well. Think the signal goes in and out at my house because of all the trees and rhododendrons. So, once again I can blame AT&T, those scoundrels.

    But glad you found Jesus.

I'm more of a supreme being sort of gal.

I have the same problem too. my iphone4 is not even a week old. I have to be in a very quiet place to be able to hear the caller, though it would be still muffled. and very hard to hear.I bought this phone in Doha, Qatar, from Vodafone. I have told my friends and colleagues that it seems like apple is just spending good money on marketing, but the products are simply dissapointing. My other phone is a Nokia, it's just perfect. I removed the plastic cover, still can't hear the caller well.

I am having the same problem. I just got my iPhone yesterday. My old phone went for a swim and according to the guy at the Verizon store was "Long gone". (said with a smirk).
I tried it out of course by calling my parents; it worked fine. Today; it only works if I use the speaker or headset. I don't really want to have to go get a replacement. I guess I will if I have to. I bought mine at the Verizon store; do I need to go there or the Apple store? Also; I've got lots of apps on it already. Those will be saved with iTunes, right?
AND....what if my new one doesn't work either? :-/

If you "Transferred Purchases", then yes, they're on your computer. Also do a backup of your iPhone.

You can take it to either. I'd honestly say to take it to the Apple store, as they will be able to do more for you.

I had the same problem. I called for an appointment at Apple at 13h, was there 12.45h,after 2 test with the technician,  at 13.05h they gave me a new phone. I think it is a hardware problem.

    Good luck

    I can't believe all this I'm reading...

I'm in business for myself and my phone is my lifeline!!! I've been BlackBerry for the past 3 years but got frustrated with my last phone and decided to take the leap to Apple... 3 weeks later 'I CAN'T HEAR A PHONE CALL'!!!  Really???!!!  The most basic function of a phone and Apple can't get that right???

I guess what bothers me more is I see from searching these posts is that the problem existed on the orginial iPhone and has progressed to the iPhone4...

Someone please give me reassurance that I made the right choice with switching??  I'm headed to the Apple store today but this is NOT a habit that I want to repeat every 3 weeks....

    Sooooo disappointed!!!!!

I had this same symptom this morning with my iPhone 4. In order to use the phone, I turned on my BT plantronics earpiece and used it for the day....with no problem. When I turned off the earpiece, the iPhone ear-speaker started working normally.

I was having the same problem... I was on a phone call, handed the phone to my husband and then he handed it back to me I could not hear the person on the other end. I did some researching and came across this on another page: spray the eat piece out with a compresses air duster. Worked instantly for me. Hopefully this works for someone else too and saves them the trouble of replacing the phone.

    Folks

I lost my iphone last Thursday and purchased a new handset on Friday and set about syncing it with my itunes etc. After completing the sync i then discovered the external speakers where faulty so no ringing sound - back i went to the store on Saturday and got a replacement handset - back home and plugged it in for syncing only to find the new handset switching itself on and off every 2 minutes! Back to store on Sunday and new handset number 3 was given to me at which time my patience was beginning to wear thin. Back home again and synced new iphone only to find today, Monday that i can make calls but cant actually hear the ringing or the person when they answer. Now i am all for having an off day at work but 3 faulty handsets in 3 days is taking the p*ss Mr Apple. I am back in the store on Wednesday and they will have to work very hard to restore my faith in the Iphone!!!!

I've had my iphone4 for nearly a year now.  All has been fine.  Then last week I get the same problem you all have: when making a call the earpiece has great sound, external speaker has great sound, but the normal "hold it to your ear" speaker is as quiet as a mouse.  I have no fix as yet and no iphone store within 100 miles.  Hard resets and plugging in, plugging out have made no difference so far.  Anyone any new thoughts?

The same thing happened to my iPhone 4 of 6 months .. And after turning it on and off and resetting it several times, it would not work either.

So I tried to plug and unplug the headphones a hundred times, and suddenly it worked again!

I too just recived an iphone 4 and could not hear the person on the other line. Feeling really silly now because I left the screen protector that came with the phone on. After peeling it off both sides, I can now hear. Wow! What a concept. LOL
