Can One Number Alternating Rows in Numbers

I would like to number every other row in Numbers with sequential numbers. 1 in row one, nothing in row 2. A 2 in row 3. Blank in 4, a 3 in row 5... (see picture)

Hi Gene,


You can do this manually (a I suspect you did for the example).


You could also use a formula like one of those below.


Your description says you want to start with 1 in row 1, nothing in row 2, 2 in row 3, nothing in row 4…


Your screen shot shows an easier version, with 1 in row 2, 2 in row 4, and the rows between empty.


  • Enter the formula on the left in A2, OR enter the formula on the right in cell A1
  • Select the cell containing the formula AND the empty cell beneath it in column A.

Grab the Fill control (yellow dot) and drag down as many rows as needed.
