On my iPhone 7 i got a activation error when sending a message on imessages and when I tried to sign in on imessages in settings it said Activation error please try again. I had no idea what to do after that and none of the youtube videos helped me at all.
So you didn't do all the steps as you stated.
SMS is text message and it states in the link I provided what to do, contact your phone carrier also in the link that you have to do if its over 24 hours.

I didn't quite get how to check if SMS is my messaging system and if you could explain how I check that would be helpful. Other than that I did everything besides for the restarting iMessages and Facetime because I can't even log into it.
I did all the steps and when I try to sign in it still says, " iMessage Activation, An error occurred during activation. Try again."
Are you sure you did all the steps outline in the link I provided?
I don’t have a carrier so I don’t think I can do that step. The other steps don’t work at all
