My AirPods won't connect with my iPhone 6s/6s Plus

My airpods won't connect with my iPhone 6s/6s Plus phone. I went into settings on my iPhone > Settings > Bluetooth. When I open the cover of my AirPods 2 - 5 inches from my iPhone, a screen appears on my iPhone showing my airpods are both (right & left) are 100% charged, and the case shows 100% charged. When I put the earbuds in my ears the sound still only comes from my phone and not my earbuds. Even when the earbuds are in my ears.
