Typing accented characters disappeared with 10.15.5 update. How do I turn it back on?

I use the feature of holding down a key in order to type special characters very frequently due to using several languages. This feature suddenly disappeared with the 10.15.5 update yesterday. I need to turn it back on, as the other means to type characters is too clumsy for frequent typing. How do I do it?

Go to system preferences/keyboard/keyboard and play with the key repeat and delay settings.

If that doesn't work, open the Terminal app and type

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true

and restart
