I am with BT in the UK, a wifi router is essential as suggested above, I access my BT mail through a browser interface not a specific mail program.
When I arrived home after purchasing my iPad I switched it on, went to settings turned on the wifi setting and waited for it to detect my router, several nearby routers were also detected, I selected my own router inserted my password and closed the settings page then opened Safari, typed in BTYahoo.com, typed in my username and password and accessed my email from there, really simple.
When not using wifi I go to the settings page and turn it off as I find it is beneficial to the battery life to do that, I have no hard facts to support that, just the old fashioned way of if you are not using something turn it off 🙂
