Unfortunately the iPhone itself is not going to be able to look up phone numbers by name UNLESS you already have the contact added to your contact list. You have already stated that you do not have that person in your contact list. This means that you need a service to lookup a phone number using conventional methods. You can try the internet lookup method, you can ask your carrier whether they have directory service (some do however I believe with an added cost). You can check in the App Store to see whether there are apps available that provide this service.

I know you do not like the answer, however Thressa, it is what it is.
